Graduates with a degree in horticulture have spent four years or more learning the science and also the art of working to develop fruit and vegetable plants, flowers  and decorative plants , seeds and seedlings. In their studies graduates with a degree in horticulture must master the fine balance required in cultivation by working with soil, water, light and air temperature to receive the optimum effect for growth.  After four years of study and field work graduates with a degree in horticulture are prepared for careers that may take them outdoors or behind a desk.  Because plants are everywhere and plant life is essential to human existence, careers for graduates with a degree in horticulture are likely to be available throughout the country and abroad.

Nurseries, greenhouses, small farms   We see them along country roads.  We stop and pick up just the right bush for our yard, tomato plant for our patio,  or flat of flowers to put in the bed behind the house.  But seldom do we recognize that our needs may have just been met by a graduate with a degree in horticulture.  Today graduates with a degree in horticulture may work their way or pay their way toward managing or owning a nursery, greenhouse or small farm and find the career of a lifetime.

Certainly nursery based work can be demanding and graduates with a degree in horticulture may find themselves challenged by the business and face to face aspects of such work.  But in the end, what brings most students into horticulture is a real love of and fascination with the always surprising world of plant life.  Being able to work with plants for a career and make a decent living will help most graduates with a degree in horticulture to get over those aspects of the business that they may find distasteful or uncomfortable.

Graduates with a degree in horticulture also have the opportunity should they choose a career in nursery , greenhouse or small farm work to share their love of plant life every day with their family that can  live on or near the premises.  Being able to be at work and at home at the same time, to go across the yard for lunch, to visit with your kids after school and to teach them what you love, these are all wonderful perks for graduates with a degree in horticulture.

Landscaping   Twenty years ago, people raked their own leaves, mowed their lawns and planted flowers as they saw fit and if they had time.  Today, in many suburban and even urban areas home owners are more than willing to pass off the task of beautifying their homes with sometimes elaborate landscaping.  Graduates with a degree in horticulture can find careers as managers or owners of landscape design companies.  Depending upon the size of the business, graduates with a degree in horticulture  may begin their career  by working or supervising on site.  As a company develops,  graduates with a degree in horticulture may find that their work is done primarily from behind a desk and combines not only the experience gained in earning  a degree in horticulture but also business know how.

Working as a landscape designer can be a highly competitive job and breaking into the industry requires time and the careful cultivating not only of plants but also of clientèle.  Landscape design can also try the patience of the graduate with a degree in horticulture who produces his best work  and still finds that his finished product does not meet the needs or desires of his customer.  The graduate with a degree in horticulture realizes that he or she must also work on interpersonal relationships and providing customer satisfaction.

There are financial pitfalls in landscape designing.  When the economy is suffering in general, some customers will determine that landscape design is an extra, something that can be bypassed until the economy rebounds.  On the other hand when the general economy is good, graduates with a degree in horticulture will find themselves reaping the benefits as well as customers step up and order.  Learning how to ride out the lows and how to save during the highs will be part of any career for graduates with a degree in horticulture who choose landscape design as a career.

Golf Clubs and Parks    Some graduates with a degree in horticulture want to use their talents on a larger scale than a home or estate.  They choose careers as designers or grounds keepers for large establishments like golf courses or private parks.  This type of work requires that the graduate with a degree in horticulture obtain a bit of specialized training in the particular kind of property with which he or she will be working.

Usually graduates with a degree in horticulture who follow careers working to maintain and develop property at a golf club or park have the distinct benefit of not having to worry about attracting new clients.  In effect they are in a contract relationship with one and only one employer.  This can  provide graduates with a degree in horticulture the kind of career where there is real job security.  As long as your work meets the needs and taste of your employer you are likely to have real job security for as long as you wish.   In the meantime your expertise as a graduate with a degree in horticulture allows you to negotiate for a comfortable salary and lifestyle.

Sales Representative   Some graduates with a degree in horticulture complete their studies and have no desire to work outdoors or in a greenhouse all their lives.  Some graduates with a degree in horticulture may in fact have the kind of personality that seeks a career on the road.  Their background makes graduates with a degree in horticulture perfect candidates to work for seed and plant supply companies who are looking for knowledgeable sales men.  Especially in areas where there is a considerable volume of potential customers, graduates with a degree in horticulture  can use their credential to secure a position with a company that has established clientèle.

Graduates with a degree in horticulture may begin a career in seed and plant supply in the sales division but eventually work their way into more administrative and higher paying positions within the same company or a similar company.  There are opportunities in seed and plant supply for graduates with a degree in horticulture who are sales oriented, don't mind travel and enjoy meeting and working with people.

Jobs with the Government   It is not surprising that the Federal Government has positions for graduates with a degree in horticulture.  In fact both state and federal government departments hire professionals who have a degree in horticulture to work as crop inspectors and in some instances as researchers in the development of seed and plant products.  Jobs with the federal government  offer reasonable salaries, good benefits and secure employment with opportunities to advance.  If there is a drawback to employment with the federal government for graduates with a degree in horticulture is that many federal jobs will require relocation, but for those who don't mind a move, or several moves, in the course of a career the opportunities offered by the government are worthy of consideration.

Graduates with a degree in horticulture who are looking to begin a career in which they can use their education need first to look inside and determine what kind of work situation makes them happy.  Do they want to be in a greenhouse, in an office or on the road?  Do they want to work for themselves, for an owner, for the government?  Will they be happy working near home or is relocation a draw?  Knowing their own tastes will help in deciding which of  many careers  graduates with a degree in horticulture to pursue.
